Pollinator Pathway Progress

By: Lou Thomas, Lead Conservation Biologist

The Conservation Department is bee-yond excited to continue the Pollinator Pathway through the Coachella Valley. After building over thirty gardens in urbanized areas of the East Valley, specifically within schools, the Pollinator Pathway project is moving to Desert Hot Springs! At least ten new gardens are in the works to be installed there over the next few years.

The Pollinator Pathway project has been an initiative to install nectar and host plants for native pollinators in a formation called “stepping stone corridors.” These pockets of habitat are well-suited for flying wildlife that can travel between sites to find food, shelter, water, and mates! By installing these gardens, we are able to provide vital resources for native pollinators throughout the valley and bring people closer to nature.

In a quickly expanding urbanized valley, having high quality habitat that allows pollinators to travel through the valley successfully while having access to all the resources they need is imperative. Not only do our incredibly important pollinators need these gardens, but it also allows us to help teach people more about our local wildlife, beautify our community, and provide water-wise plants to our cities!
