Species

Several animals and plants at The Living Desert are threatened or in danger
of extinction. Many of them are reproducing under carefully managed programs.
Endangered Species - Wild and Rare
- Extinct: Species or subspecies that no longer exist in the wild or
in captivity, anywhere on earth
- Endangered: Species or subspecies that are in immediate danger of
going extinct unless drastic conservation efforts are made
- Threatened: Species or subspecies that have low or declining population
numbers. They are likely to become endangered if not protected
- Extirpated: Species or subspecies which have been eliminated from
the area but still exist elsewhere.
Why do animals and plants become endangered?
Often they are adversely affected by one or more of the following:
- Habitat destruction
- Poaching and over hunting
- Introduction of non-native species
- Pollution
- Pet or plant trade
- Fear, Ignorance, Myth
